If, like me, you use Microsoft Office Business Accounting 2009 then you may find this article very useful.

As you probably know Microsoft terminated support for this product in 2009/10. This is a great pity as I think it is a superb application and provides what I need to run my business, both from an accounting view-point and stock control and analysis.

Recently I upgraded my Windows 7 64bit PC and had to re-install.

As it was not straight forward I have documented it here for others…

1. Install the free to use version of MS Office Accounting 2009 Pro using the default key provided (available here http://download.cnet.com/Microsoft-Office-Accounting-Professional/3000-2066_4-10704794.html )
   You will be at version v.0.3610.0
2. Download and install Service Pack 2 (available here http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=11465 )
3. Open OA2009 and select to open a Sample Company (for now)
4. You will be prompted to go through a setup and upgrade process
5. Once the update process has finished restart OA2009
6. You will be asked if you wish to upgrade to the full Office Accounting 2009 Professional version. You need your original license key for this without it you cannot continue.
   If you no longer have your license key then you may be able to get Mamut to request it from Microsoft which is how I got mine. Mamut can be contacted via their website http://www.mamut.com/uk/accounting/
7. When prompted – Enter your product key
8. When the upgrade check your version. You should be running Pro at v4.0.33180
9. Next run Windows Update until all updates are completed (you may need to run and reboot a few times). When all updates are done you should now be on v4.0.3610, the final version of MS OA2009 Pro.

   Note: I subsequently noticed that you can download Service Pack 3 from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2006634
   I haven’t tried it but I’m pretty sure that you could run this instead of relying on the Windows Update process to get to v4.0.3610

10. Now that you have an up to date version you should be able to import your data backup of your original accounting data.
