Cartier watches are fine jewelry that are made out of only the best materials. Cartier uses several techniques to identify and mark its watches so that an authentic Cartier watch can be told apart from a fake one. The surest way to know you have purchased an authentic Cartier watch is to purchase from a certified Cartier dealer.

Apr 09, 2019 There are noCartier jewels with the same serial number. The format of the serial number has changed over the years as production and popularity has increased. They can be composed by the following: 5 digits and 1 letter (12345 A). The serial number is unique to the watch and can serve a number of purposes. All manufacturers use different serial number systems, but a serial number usually consists of a series of digits, sometimes also letters. Cartier is one of the most well-known jewelry and luxury brands in the world. Cartier uses serial numbers for its watches.

Serial number determines Serial number determines Model. Serial numbers on many Cartiers can be found on the case back. Identify the material of the case, bezel and the bracelet. Most common material are: stainless steel, steel and 14K gold, steel and 18K gold, 9K gold, 14K gold or 18K gold (white, yellow or rose), and platinum. On an authentic Cartier, the SN will be etched on to the back cover; most counterfeit pieces will either have no serial number or have the number on a sticker. Here are a few other methods to determine if your piece is counterfeit.

Checking for Authenticity

Look for the word 'Cartier'

Look over the watch for the word 'Cartier' generally printed on the face of the watch. Many fakes misspell the word, and it is clear you have a fake if 'Cartier' is written wrong.

Put a Few Drops of Water on the Face

•••Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

Put a few drops of water on the face of the watch and see if it smears or beads off. If the water smears, it is likely you have a fake. If the water beads on the surface, this is an indication of sapphire quality glass that is used to make Cartier watches.

Look for the Logo

Look for the Cartier logo on the watch, which is two letter C's facing back to back. The logo can be found on the dial of the watch, the back or the buckle.

Check for a Serial Number

•••Chris Jackson/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

Check the side of the face of the watch for an engraved serial number. Cartier watches are all professionally engraved with a serial number on the side. If the engraving looks poorly done, you probably have a fake.

Look for a Gemstone

Look over the crown of the watch and see if there is a gemstone set into it. A gemstone glued on top instead of set into the crown is a clear indication that the watch is not authentic.

Check the Overall Appearance

Check the overall appearance of the watch. If it appears scratched or chipped, the watch is probably a fake. Cartier uses very high-quality materials that are difficult to damage with normal use.

  • Cartier watches are made of the finest materials and will be more substantial and weigh more because of this. You can bring your watch to any certified Cartier dealer to have it checked professionally for authenticity.

  • A good Cartier watch starts at about $3,000. If you are being offered a Cartier watch for much less, it is either fake or stolen.

Every Rolex is engraved with a unique serial number. This indicates what year the watch was made, and can be used to authenticate and value the timepiece.
To find out your Rolex's manufacture date, simply search its unique serial number in our Rolex serial number database below.

A note on Rolexes produced after autumn 2009: In autumn 2009, Rolex started using a random numbering system to generate its serial numbers. The only way to identify the exact date of a Rolex produced in late 2009 onwards is to take it into an official Rolex dealer.

A note on Rolexes with a serial number between 100,000 and 999,999: When Rolex made their millionth watch, they confusingly restarted their serial numbers at 100,000 instead of carrying on with a seven-digit code. If your Rolex's serial number falls between 100,000 and 999,999, you'll therefore need to take it to a trusted jeweller to have it accurately dated, although our tool will be able to tell you its two possible production dates.

Where to find a Rolex's serial number?

Every genuine Rolex has a unique serial number. It will be in one of two places, depending when it was made.

  • Pre-2005: Between the lugs of the 6 o'clock side
  • 2005 onwards: On the inner bezel (dial rehaut)

If your watch was made before 2005, you'll find its serial number engraved on the case between the lugs (the 'horns' that attach to the bracelet) of the 6 o'clock side. You'll need to remove the watch's band to see it. If you're not confident about doing this yourself, take it to a jeweller.

In 2005, Rolex began laser-engraving the serial number on the inner bezel, or dial rehaut, as well as between the lugs of the 6 o'clock side of the case. In 2008, the company switched to only engraving the serial number on the inner bezel, as this is much harder to counterfeit.

The inner bezel is the ring that runs around the inside of the watch's bezel, perpendicular to the face. Rolex watches made from 2005 onwards will have the word 'Rolex' repeated around the inner bezel, with the brand logo at the 12 o'clock position and the serial number at 6 o'clock.

Once you've found your Rolex's serial number, simply search for it in our tool or on our handy database to discover its production date.

Do fake Rolexes have serial numbers?

If a Rolex doesn't have a serial number, then it isn't genuine.

Serial numbers can be faked, but this is extremely difficult to do well — especially on the inner bezel, where you find the serial number of Rolexes made after 2005. Fraudsters tend to acid-etch the serial number onto the watch rather than engrave it, as engraving is much more difficult. Fake serial numbers often look poorly engraved or very faint.

Some imitations are so well-made it takes an expert eye to tell them apart from the real thing. If you're not sure a Rolex is genuine, take it in to a trusted jeweller and have it appraised.
